He currently works as physician at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, where he chairs the initiative for the Strategic Prospection of the Brazilian Health System, “Brazil Health Tomorrow”, and acts as a consultant for PROQUALIS, the Collaborative Center for Quality in Health Care and Patient Safety. Member of the Accreditation Committee, Joint Commission International. Member of the Consultant Council, Brazilian Center of Health Studies (Centro Brasileiro de Estudos de Saúde – CEBES). Member of the Entrepreneurial Council of Health and Medicine, Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro. Consultant on International Relations, Brazilian Consortium of Health Systems and Services Accreditation. Former adjunct professor, Institute of Social Medicine, UERJ. He was the Health State Secretary of Rio de Janeiro (1988-1990) and the Health Care Secretary, Health Ministry (2007-2008), among other public jobs. He was President of the Brazilian Association of Graduate Studies on Collective Health (Associação Brasileira de Saúde Coletiva - ABRASCO) (2000-03); board member of the International Society for Quality in Health Care (2011-13); ad hoc Director of the CEBES (2012-13); and adjunct chair of the Latin American Association of Social Medicine and Collective Health (2012-2014). He has experience in Collective Health, with emphasis on health policies and planning and management, mainly focusing on the following subjects: assessment of health services, health policies and management, health policies, health services quality, and health care. Titular collaborating member of the Brazilian College of Surgeons. Great Officer of the Medical Merit Order. Oswaldo Cruz Gold Medal recipient.
